Lake Atitlán (meaning “at the water” in the Mayan language Nahuatl) is a beautiful lake in a massive volcanic crater in Guatemala’s highlands, edged by younger volcanoes. A lake of awesome views, Atitlán was called “the most beautiful lake in the world,” by naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, and written of by Aldous Huxley. The lake is home to a variety of Mayan cultures, and also a poular tourist destination for Guatemalan citizens and tourists alike.
When I was living in Guatemala City, I enjoyed getting out for the weekend, and exploring the beauty of its shores from dawn until night.
